A nation in desperate need of change

mayThis morning there are reports from various sources of how many vacancies or impending vacancies exist in the NHS and our state run educational service. The high levels of vacancies for Nurses estimated at some 40,000 or 11% of the workforce coupled with the numbers of teachers and teaching assistants currently being laid off as Schools battle to balance their budgets sends a very clear message that our present Government is not capable of running the country in an effective manner. It would of course be reasonable to assume that they are effective when it comes to supporting business and those people who create wealth or strengthening the police and the armed forces. As I wrote yesterday there is clear evidence that the Government has failed to deal with tax evaders which may of course be seen as a way of making the UK attractive to wealth creaters, but if the only people who benefit from their wealth creation are themselves and their families, then this is an empty strength. The same group of people has for decades wanted a more meaningful level of training for young people. Even after 7 years and the promise of an apprenticeship scheme that has a great deal of promise, at best this will not begin to have a positive impact for at least a year. We already know that the Tories have applied a level of strangulation to the funding and therefore employment of Police Forces and similarly the armed forces.

All of these issues would explain why their election rhetoric is focused on who will make the best job of Brexit which is the one thing that no one can measure or predict. Even the fact that we are in the middle of an election which the Conservatives are claiming is needed to strengthen their hand in those negotiations indicates a complete lack of planning and preparation. It follows a 9 month period in which there were 9 firm denials of an election being called and then as a result of a walk in the hills of Snowdonia we are faced with the snap election which most people had either expected to take place last Autumn or were convinced was not needed at all. It seems clear to me that electing another Tory Government will simply lead to even greater levels of chaos in the NHS, Education, Defence, Policing and Business support. However they seem to think they will do a better job than any other party of destroying our 40 year old relationship with the EU. What a great promise!
