Now that we have decided (well to be precise, just over half of the voters decided) to leave the European Union, it appears that we are being overwhelmed with opportunities to change our nation for the better (assuming that you believe in matters such as the earth being flat). According to this article in todays Telegraph, food retailers and manufacturers will be able to sell goods in imperial measures, and according to this article in a recent edition of the Daily Mail we will be able to turn back the clock on decimalisation leading the a return of 12d in each shilling and 20 shillings in each pound.
These changes will no doubt be a great boost to politicians such as Boris Johnson and his tribe of Brexiteers. Meanwhile we can look forward to many generations of people who will never fully understand the change and a huge cost as the educational reference books need to be backdated to explain how to count in base 12 rather than base 10. On a brighter note people like my Mother will be able to live out their last few years with a currency and packages of groceries that will remind them of the good old days of the 1930’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. I imagine those promoting these ideas will next turn their attention to bringing ration books back. Then we will know we have really achieved a return of sovereignty!
