The news today that under the leadership of Theresa May, the Home Office offered a written proposal, tabled by Mrs May in Cabinet that the children of illegal immigrants should be moved to the worst performing schools in a given area should disturb all of us. The purpose of the Government is to ensure that every child in every school gets an education which is of the best quality possible. There is no cost benefit to providing poor quality education, even if there is a correlation between the quality of buildings and the education outcomes. Issues that relate to the parents of any child in the UK should not be used as a basis for how well educated the child is. Rather than asking for poorly performing schools to be used as a punishment for certain children, we deserve a Government and indeed a Prime Minister whose focus on education is to do all it can to improve the education prospects for all residents whatever their background.
In her speech launching her leadership campaign, Theresa May said
“This, to me, is what the Conservative Party is all about. In the name of equality, Labour end up holding people back – but we believe in setting people free to go as far as their talents will take them. That is why school reform is such a passion for so many Conservatives – and I will be setting out my own plans for schools policy in the coming weeks.”
On the basis of todays news she is clearly not suited to be a Party Leader, let alone a Prime Minister.
