Would I lie to you?

queenIts not hard to find fault with this years Queens speech, but it is very disturbing that our Government has asked the Queen to lie when she spoke to the assembled Lords, Ladies and MPs. She was asked to say “My government will continue to play a leading role in world affairs, using its global presence to tackle climate change and address major international security, economic and humanitarian challenges.”  and being a compliant Monarch that is exactly what she did say. Yet on the Friday before her speech on the Wednesday, the United Nations open-ended working group (OEWG) on multi-lateral nuclear disarmament ended its second session. This working group has the support of 138 nations, yet has been boycotted by our Government, the same Government that claims to play a leading role in world affairs. This seems to resonate with the way in which our Government claims to want to play a leading role in Europe, yet is made up of men and women, most of whom are committed to leaving the main institution that oversees the work of 28 nations in Europe.

We need to be signatories to this vital work of the UN as it seeks to bring an end to nuclear arms throughout the world, if that means we are embarrassed as a result of our own plans to replace Trident, then so be it. We need a Government that is honest and committed to peacemaking, not one that is prepared to send a 90 year old woman into the House of Lords, simply to tell lies to all of the assembled dignitaries. After all if that is what they will do in front of their own class, what will they do for people like us who are expected to turn out to vote every 5 years and are then keep quiet for the next 1825 days?
