There are numerous website postings dedicated to the things one should not do if one is angry. They cover all sorts of social media and the old fashioned social interactions. As yet I have not found one that refers to sending young men and women to wage war in a foreign land. Listening to the angry voices in Parliaments and in the wider public domain in both the UK and France over the last 5 days, perhaps it is time for such a website to be constructed. I have watched the Westwing on many occasions and in the safety of a world that is made up of actors and imaginary bombs, there are a lot of truths that Aaron Sorkin manages to serve up. However unfortunately there are no episodes that relate to a group such as IS, ISIS, ISIL or DAISH which operates within another state, and is surrounded by innocent residents. Simply bombing Syrian Cities which these forces control is bound to kill some of the Syrians that have not already been killed by President Assad or have not fled to Europe or other. According to David Cameron speaking in Parliament, airstrikes will ‘cut off the head of the snake’. It seems clear to me that if these airstrikes mean adding to the bombing runs already being carried out by the USA and other Airforces, the idea that a few more tonnes of bombs will somehow decapitate a snake that has up until now remained unscathed, makes no sense at all. Surely no one would argue that IS does not need to be defeated. No one with any humanity could feel impervious to the appalling actions in Paris on Friday and the attack apparently happening in a Parisian suburb this morning. No one would disagree with the need to end the controlling thoughts which lie behind IS. However I cannot be alone in thinking that a bombing mission or two will not really end this, in the way in which the Prime Minister is suggesting. I understand his anger, and some of that is anger at his own impotence as the leader of a nation which wants to be seen to help resolve this International problem, yet cannot bring itself to fully embrace those being displaced, nor is able to force the other big players to change their actions. However this anger is not a good basis for sending our munitions, much less our pilots into a warzone.
