Two minutes – for all

untitled (262)As the clock strikes 11am, in my mind the two minutes, a mere 0.1% of today, or 0.01% of this week, let alone the minute proportion of this year are dedicated to those who fell after facing the firing squad just as much as those who fell under enemy fire and those who gave their lives even though they did not wear any uniform but nevertheless served our nation in other ways. I understand the symbolism of the red poppy, and I understand why some refuse to wear one, replacing it with a white poppy. I also appreciate why some find the white poppy offensive, even though as this photograph shows, they can flower side by side with their red colleagues. The conflict between these two positions is a conflict that should be laid to rest, just as all conflicts need bringing to an end.
